  A self made retailing multi-millionaire, James A. Nannen's career has been nothing short of fascinating. After graduating with a BA in English from Springfield College in Massachusetts in 1965 he hopped a freighter for a month long journey to Australia where for a year he was one of the highest paid door-to-door sales people for the Collier's Encyclopedia Company in Sydney. He turned down an offer to open a new sales office in Fiji and returned stateside in 1966 to hold sales positions with Hallmark Cards and Proctor & Gamble, until 1968 when he became involved in the retail pet industry as we know it today.
Nannen has owned twelve retail pet specialty stores; a book, record and candy store; a pet and pet supply flea market operation; a wholesale bird distributing business; a mail order business; a private label pet vitamin and shampoo company (PET 2000) and a mall retail kiosk. I guess you could say Nannen does retail!
Having resided in St. Petersburg, Florida since 1981, he certainly has no trouble filling his time. When he and Donna (his wife of 32 years) are not on one of their three or four yearly trips to some distant part of the world, you might find him fine-tuning his retail pet specialty stores with their two daughters Rebecca and Rachel or working on his new series of "$mart Retailer$" books.
